Sudden changes in the coloration of the paw pad can indicate a health problem. An injury can also cause discoloration. Lightening or yellowing of the pad could be normal de-pigmentation, but since there is pain involved I have to think it is something more. It could be an indication of anything from an injury, to a fracture, to lupus or a tumor. Only a vet can tell you for sure. Typically an infection would show up as reddening around the affected area, not yellowing.
