Q: Should I change my weims eating habits?

I have an 18month old weimaraner and just introduced an 8month old german shorthaired pointer. They are getting along well, but I have a feeding question. My weim is a grazer when it comes to eating, I could fill his bowl in the morning and he would eat when he'd want to throughout the day. The shorthaired devours his foods rather quickly when I put it down. Where I rescued him from, he was with other dogs, so Im assuming they may have all been feed at once and it was it eat it or loose it to another. So, the last couple of days I have put down the food and after an hour picked the bowls up, the shorthaired eating all his food, and the weim not touching it. Do I just continue as I am and eventually the weim will "get it" and be sure he eats when I put the food down?

My suggestion is to ensure the weim is eating his own food and the shorthaired isn't eating the weim's food when you aren't looking is put the food down for 15 to 20 minutes, allow them to eat, then remove the food whether they have finished it all or not. This teaches both dogs that they have an alloted amount of time to eat, and you can monitor who is eating what and how much, so you can easily make sure both dogs are eating their own food.

This is purely my opinion and suggestion, however, I just strongly recommend removing the bowls after leaving them out. Your weim will catch on quickly :)
