Q: Should I Adopt or Wait

October 13, 2008 | By Fnfodom | 31 answers | Expired: 2102 days ago

This is kind of a multi-topic question. I volunteer at our local animal shelter and there are 2 dogs, one of which I would love to adopt - a long hair daschund and a yorkie. My son and I would really like a small dog. The problem is that we have an 11 year old australian shepherd/border collie that I think is nearing her final days. What's anyone's opinion if I should wait until Annie passes, or if it would be o.k. to adopt one of the little sweeties?

I feel it would depend upon the temperment of the small dog(s). If they are bouncy and have the tendency to want to play a lot, your older dog probably would not appreciate his final days being spent tormented. It is wonderful that you are willing to adopt, and there will always be dogs out there that need you, but it seems like you devoted your life to your older dog first and should probably do what makes the remainder of his days the best for him. That's a tough one though so good luck!

Only you can make that decision. I would think it would depend on how close your other dog is to dying. I devoted the end of my previous dog's life solely to her. I didn't want her to feel that she was in any way being demoted to second place.

On the other hand, if your older dog is not irritable due to failing health and wanting to be alone, and could benefit from the companionship of another dog that isn't too "jumpy" for her, I would suggest considering adoption so long as you test the two of them together first and see how they react to one another. Wow - long sentence - sorry about that.

only you can answer that.. my thoughts would be does it add to the quality of life of the animals I have now. If it will enhance and give them companionship then I would. If it will cause undue stress then I would wait.
