Q: Shorty's Strange Habbit?

Shorty is my male 7 year old american short hair orangish/ redish cat. Shorty has a very strange habbit he doesn't do this with any other bugs or insects but if it is a spider he will do this. Shorty plays with the spider and then when he is done playing with the spider he doesn't care if it is dead or still alive he will eat it. Some times he will spit it back up but he only spits back up the ones that were already dead. Shorty also has a thing for eating moths as well. Why does Shorty do this?

I would say he's a cat! lol Maybe he likes the way the legs look - reminding him of a mouse's tail. As long as the spiders aren't poisonous, I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like a personality quirk to me.

Good luck!

sounds like a man who knows what he likes. and who knows, maybe they taste better? i had a cat who was an extraordinary fly catcher. never went after anything else though. for her, it was the flying action. cats are usually more interested in one of two movements: flying prey or ground moving prey. not that they won't chase both, but they almost always have a preference. spiders are unique in their movement, which is probably shorty's attraction.

Playing with the Spider definitely provides him with entertainment, Predator v.s. Prey. =) Maybe you should work with him, if you catch him in the act to 'not' do that. You wouldn't want him to get sick or anything, you never know what kind of Spider it may be.
