I have used them before. But not regularly. If used properly they are not supposed to make a dog yelp, if it yelps it is set too high. A shock collar used properly barely makes the dog flinch and is used as a reminder to either pay attention, or to correct certain behaviors.
The one I've used on my springer is set to where when I push the button he stops what he's doing and turns his head towards me, he never yelps, jumps, or even stops walking, he sits and calmly waits for me to give him his next command.
I use it in high distraction settings where I need him to pay attention to me as he tends to be somewhat dog aggressive. So far its' worked like a dream to keep him focused on me and not on a dog that might be giving him a look he doesn't like.
I do believe they work well, in the right hands, with someone who has done research on how they should be used.
This particular dog is the only dog I've ever used one on, they aren't part of my normal training routine with my other dogs.

I don't like shock collars. I have seen dogs fearful to even go out in their yards because of those awful things. Electric fences are same. I've said before, these fences do NOT keep other animals or people out of the yard and they may not even keep your dog IN. Dogs have run through them and then been hit by cars. It seems to me that they are a lazy (and painful) way to train dogs.

AGAINST. They are cruel and inhumane. Use positive reinforcement for good behavior.

against. My friend had one for her dog and I think that it was highly unnecessary and cruel.

Against! If you need to use a training collar use the Citronella spray collar. They work really well to stop unnecessary barking.

personally, I don't like to see these used. Our neighbor has one on their dog and if it doesn't come when he says it gets a shock and he yelps. Not a good thing.

Totally against. I was upset when a family member of mine bought one for her dog and sure enough she burned her dog's neck with the thing. Thankfully she never put it back on her dog again. They're very cruel and no human in their right mind would put one on themselves, let alone their pet.
