Sounds like he's losing his winter coat. A good shedding comb such as a FurBuster or FURminator will work to get that dead hair off. If they are afraid of being brushed start off with a combing glove then work your way up to a comb or brush. I sell these grooming supplies on my website Dixiepets.com

Brush, brush, brush. My animals are all shedding like crazy right now too!! Combs work well for a short haired guy like Barney, a good scrubby bath is good for getting our all that loose hair. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one fighing the shed right now!!!

Lila is blowing her coat too right now. I was trying the brush but it was not getting ahold of her undercoat. I am using the same Furminator I use on the cats and it's fantastic. I have Lila clipped short and this was the only thing that would take care of it.
