Q: Severe Weather and Pets

Does anyone know what to do in the case of a tornado if you live in a mobile home with pets and there is no other shelter? In case of severe weather there is no way I am leaving Magic and Angel behind-especially after having to be without them the past three months. Is the ditch still the safest palce?

I'm no expert in this area, but I have seen reports that going into a ditch would be one of the safest places. However, if you need to bring your cats along, I think they should be confined in a carrier or two so that they don't run away in fear. Perhaps placing a blanket over the carrier so that they can't see what is happening would reduce their anxiety.

I would contact your town officials and ask them what to do and where to go. There must be a town shelter that opens up in case of sudden emergency or weather. Make sure you ask them if the cats would be okay to bring if they are crated. Also call local vets and ask if they can suggest where to go. Having a plan will be vital if anything goes wrong. Put together an 'emergency' box you can grab in a moment with some supplies for you and the cats, food/gallon of water, disposable litter box etc. Hope this helps dear friend!

In the event that you are caught outdoors, a ditch is the safest place. I would look into local shelters or even a friend or co-worker that might let you bring your cats in a carrier in the event that their are storms in your area. I think Tracy's ideas to talk to local vets and putting together a box of emergency supplies are very good suggestions, too. It is important to have your plan in place and know when you will leave your home, since this will not be safe once a tornado hits (e.g. do you leave if there is a watch?)
