Q: Safest place for dogs in a car??/

March 29, 2009 | By Sandy F. | 14 answers | Expired: 1936 days ago

Sandy F.

We have small dogs. Two terriers, one that is 10 pounds and the other is 16 pounds. We just got a new car and want to make sure the dogs are in the safest place they can be in. IN the old car, we just let them sit in the back seat or on our laps, but we are nervous in the new car for our safety and theres. We just bought a VW Tiguan. We have a hatch back trunk.

We tried to put the dogs in the back, but they learned to jump over, and they did not like it because they could not see outside!!!

any suggestions!

you can put them in the new car and let them get used to the surroundings before you take them on a trip and maybe sit in the back with them so that they feel safe

I used a basket kind of car seats for my 8 lbs and 4 lbs yorkies. The basket car-seat hangs and straps around the back-rest of any seat in a car (passenger seat or back seats). It comes with a bucket that hooks to a collar or harnesses. So a dog will stay put all the time while he can see out and enjoy the view.

Here is a picture I found from the net since I don't carry this at my store. www.petsolutions.com/Images.aspx?ItemID=10600621

I got one of those harness seat belts for my Toki. She wasn't too fond of it at first, but now she hops right into her spot in the back seat just waiting to be buckled in. I have seen what look like booster seats for smaller dogs. They have the same harness that clips into the seat belt, but they let your little one sit up higher so they can see out the window.

I have heard that the pet stores sell dog harness restraints. They sound like a good choice to keep your dogs secure when traveling.

The least safe place for them is loose in the car or on your laps. I know of 2 stories that show it's really best that they be restrained. I know it's cute to have them out with you and seems like they're having 'fun' but their safety really is what's most important. I can tell that you want them to be safe.

I agree that the back seat with a car harness is the best place.

The best place would be in the back seat with the car seat harnesses.

Since they are small,I would get car seats, harnesses and seat belts. You can get those in any pet store.

In a seatbelt or doggie carrier. I hate when people put their dogs in the back of truck. I was driving on the interstate the other day, and someone had their dog in the back.No protection at all for the poor dog.

I have 3 little ones & they always wear harnesses when traveling and I hook them in with a seatbelt.
There are dog seatbelts you can get. Also, car seats. Mine don't care about looking outside, so when I got the third one I stopped using their car seat.
