Rephrased: Why has my cat taken to jumping on kitchent counter?

Frodo has been with me 10+ years. He's always been one of two or more cats in household; no particular jealousies noted. About five months ago he began jumping up on kitchen counter and/or table when I'm not in the room, a *huge* No-No at my house. He knows it's wrong but nothing stops him (*traditional squirt bottle,* sticky tape, aluminum foil, vaseline on counters, etc). Our vet has diagnosed early (borderline) hyperthoidism but all else is well. I've never experienced this behavior in decades of happy kitty relationships; have talked with many locally. No answers. Anyone have suggestions?

Block your kitchen of with baby gates so the he can not get to the counters in the first place, if nothing else works.

Hope this helps(:
