Hi. I am 16 and I am trying to figure out what I want to do as a career in life. I have always loved animals and thought it would be cool to be a vet. I have pros and cons for becoming a vet. What I would like to know is can any vets out there tell me how they like their job? Also, what are some other good careers paths involving animals, I know there are tons, just looking for some ideas. Thanks!

I worked at an animal shelter, which if you're interested in a career as a vet would be a great place to volunteer. If you let them know you are interested in possibly going to school to be a vet, they can get you more involved in the actual care and treatment, and if they have an in house vet, they may be able to let you help a little there. The nice thing about having a career as a vet is that pet populations are increasing, so although it is competitive, there are jobs (more than just having a practice). There are also other animals related fields, like vet techs, or working at animals sanctuaries, some careers do exist in animal shelters too. Go volunteer, talk to local vets and see if they offer shadowing programs, visit and ask questions as many places as you can! Also, don't be afraid to change your mind, I know a lot of people that follow a path they decided was right when they were your age, they decide it's not right but wait to change till it's difficult. Leave your options a little open! Good luck.

This may just be the most ignorant answer you get, but my heart's in the right place! You could search at ZooToo under "Services" for maybe your zip code and/or Veterinarian or Clinic or Hospital and contact some locations so you could visit and perhaps tour the facilities and talk with the vet techs, the vets themselves, etc., and ask questions.

I hope this helps; God bless you and as Heather said so well, "don't be afraid to change your mind, I know a lot of people that follow a path they decided was right when they were your age, they decide it's not right but wait to change till it's difficult. Leave your options a little open!" and as Jessica explained, it's not as easy as it may seem.

Hi Jenn,

Being a vet is great! It really helps open alot of doors and is a great conversation piece. You can do so much with the degree, not just practice work. If you are interested in a career as a vet or any other animal health profession, I would recommend volunteering at a clinic or a shelter to see what the job entails.
