Q: Puppy peeing on the deck?

My new puppy is going on 4 months. I have had her a little over a month. Sometimes she will go down the back deck to the yard to pee and poo on her own. But there are times that she will just squat and pee on the deck if I don't watch her or actually walk outside and point her to the lawn. Why is that? She seems to do great most of the time. She is "friends" with a 3 year old american bulldog and when she is with him, she will go in and out of the doggie door to pee and poo on her own. Am I confusing her by letting her have the run of the house at times and then making her go on her own at other times? I am confused. I haven't been real strick on her potty training as she is with the older dog quite a bit.

You need to take her out off of the deck and that will stop. She is very cute! Don't worry, she will eventually get the hang of it.

Being consistent is very important and alot of praise when she makes the right choice is also a good thing. That is one beautiful puppy, congratulations and good luck with the training, she'll get it!

at the shelter i volunteer at we just got 22 puppies and we are housetraining them. what we do is spray some watered down bitter apple where we don't want them to pee or poo... it works well for us. also make a big deal about her doing the right thing. she will get used to it and learn fast

Your puppy might smell the bathroom scent on the deck and think it's okay to go there again. Make sure you do a good job of washing that off. You might have to watch her for a while until she breaks the habit of going on the deck. If you catch her in the act, shout a firm "no!", pick her up and carry her to the lawn. It shouldn't be too long until she realizes the deck is not a potty.

try using the puppy weewee pads she will want to go on them because of the smell. and place them further and further away from the door and once it is in the middle of the yard remove it all together. Also rember to praise her or give her treats for going in the right spot that will make her want to go in the grass or on the weewee pads more because she will think I am gonna do this because I will get a treat for doing this.
