I believe holistic diets are the best, I feed a grain free but that is not always the best choice for a large breed pup but natural is the way to go if you want to avoid common health problems such as allergies and certain diseases such as diabetes, cancer, kidney infections, stones and more. Look for a food with no corn, wheat or soy that's the best way to start. A meat and meat meal should always be your first ingredients, I like to see multiple meat sources in the ingredients. Also look for a food that is naturally preserved with no artificial colorings. There are many good choices out there, some of the more marketed foods cost much more than they are worth ingredient wise so don't be fooled by that, most natural diets you can only find at your local independant pet stores, they won't sell to large companies or grocery stores. dogfoodanalyisis.com is a great place to start and check reviews and ratings on the foods you were looking at.

you can write the brand names in the search bar and see how the measure up at this site: www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
the way i see it, we don't have to buy our animals the fancy 6 star brands. who ever eats a perfect diet anyway? but 4 or 5 stars are still excellent choices, and even 3 stars aren't bad.
