Q: Puppies

I am fostering week old puppies and they keep trying to suckle on each other (mom got hit by a car) and these were brought to the shelter. How do I get them to stop sucking on each others privates? I really don't want then going potty in their siblings mouths.

I too have fostered puppies in the same situation. Nursing is a comfort to them, it is not only for nourishment. Sadly they will nurse each other until their little parts are red and swollen. There is really nothing you can do about it. I assume that you are bottle feeding often so you at least know they are doing it only for comfort and not because they are hungry. You can try always keeping warm bottles in their area. Make sure they stay warm, that helps them sleep for comfort. I do not envy you, as those long nights for weeks in a row were difficult ones! Good luck!

When I bred Huskies and Chihuahuas, they did this to each other even though Mom was around. I think it is just the suckling instinct which yours are really experiencing since Mom is gone. Separating them would be an option, but I know they need each other for warmth. Possibly, feeding more often (I KNOW it's a pain) would be a better option. I don't believe it is really harmful though, unless one gets too irritated in that area. They are just looking for comfort. Hope this helps. Julee

I have a similar problem so I am interested in seeing what people say. I have 2 rescue dogs (brother and sister) that was also taken from mom too young and when playing they always bite onto each others privates sometimes sucking for a second but not like for food like playing. It is embarrassing especially with company and we always try to get them to stop but I wonder if it is something with the leaving mom too soon thing.
