Q: Pet insurance

March 5, 2009 | By Dennis N. | 15 answers | Expired: 2012 days ago

Every time I go to the vet's office, I see information regarding pet insurance. I'm considering pet insurance for our cats. Could somebody please tell me their experience with pet insurance and if the recommend it.

Thank you!

Dennis

I have VPI for both of my dogs. I was a little wary of getting it at first because of the cost until a couple different friends' dogs had to have major surgeries that cost several thousand dollars. The pet insurance paid for almost all of each surgery. Too many people have to put down their pets because they can not afford the surgery.... I didn't want that to happen to me. Plus, the insurance usually pays for itself over the life of the pet. I truthfully wish though that I had started it immediately on my newest dog. We randomly found out that she has an issue abound a month after she came to live with us and the insurance does not cover known preexisting conditions.

I'm a vet tech and have heard from many insurance companies at conferences. I believe that Pet's Best insurance is probably the most comprehensive plan out there. The founder is a vet and started the pet health insurance business. From all the companies out there, this one most interested me. I'm thinking of getting insurance for my new kitty soon and this is were I'll be going.

I have VPI on both my cat and my dog. I chose to only get accident and illness coverage because I didn't feel that the math added up for the wellness plans. The cost of the wellness plan was more than I would normally spend in a year. Hopefully, the accident and illness is also much more than I would spend in a year (fingers crossed) but the peace of mind that I will be able to afford to get them the care that they need in case of an emergency is completely worth it to me.

One question that you do want to ask is what do they consider a pre existing condition? What I found is this. Some companies create their policies so that it covers a one year period. If your pet is diagnosed with a condition within that year, the condition will be treated. However, when the policy is renewed the next year, that condition will be seen as pre existing and will not be covered anymore.

Not all companies operate like that though. This is why I went with VPI. Only conditions that were present before I purchased the policy were deemed preexisting. Everything else will be covered for the life of my pets.

Hope this helps.
