Q: Parakeets and an Exterminator?

How can I safely control insects in my home now that we have the parakeets? We live in a heavily wooded area and this time of year there are all kinds of critters that are beginning to come out and make their way into our home. We used to have the "bug guy" come a couple times a year in the spring and summer but that was before the birds. Does anyone know of a certain company or chemical that is especially good for homes with birds? I know many of you will be against an exterminator all together, but we're not just talking an occasional ant, spider, or ladybug. There are critters called "wood roaches" that live in the woods here and they find their way in...the bug guy says they aren't like a kitchen roach, but still I think even one of those guys is too many!! I keep the home clean but they just live right oustide the door in the trees, mulch, etc. Help!

I know what you mean about those nasty wood roaches, seems they are every where at cirtain times of the year. I use to raise Parakeets and would never let the exterminator come after he told me he wouldn't spray around the birds because it could affect their eggs.
I would call your vet and see if they have any suggestions also,if there is a bird breeder you could call in your area,I would call and see what they have to say.
Another thing you may want to check out are bird forums on the web, type in Parakeet forums or Parakeet chat, someone may have some good advice they are willing to share :)
Good Luck!

I know there are more environmentally friendly ways to keep bugs out, such as using lavender or something like that. But I what I would do personally is to board your bird at a friend's or vets for a few days while you have the exterminator come and let your house air back out. If you'd like, I can go find the link that explains how to kill these bugs without putting your bird in harms way.

Can you board them at your vet or a friend's house for a few days? Birds are very sensitive so I wouldn't risk having them in the house until you know that a safe amount of time has gone by after spraying.
