Q: Paintable maneki neko beckoning cat?
i'd love to be able to find a plain white, paintable version of the maneki neko "beckoning cat" like you see in Chinese restaurants. one of my cats, Spot, sits and waves and really looks a lot like one of these figurines when he does, and i really want to be able to paint one to look just like him since i can't find one quite right pre-painted. his precise markings are fairly unique and interesting (he's like an orange and white ying-yang). so far i'm striking out online. any crafty cat-lovers out there got any suggestions?

This was all I could find for a project that I want to do with students. Maybe this will help you.

depending on the type of paint used on one, you can almost always find gold ones at chinese restraunts for sale. I would take a very light finishing sandpaper, maybe a 400 grit, and lightly sand and rough the finish. Doing this will ensure the new paint sticks. Then use a good spray primer and prime it. Once the primer dries do another very light finish sanding and you can paint your kitty however you like. I recommend water base paints like acrylic with a spray on clear coat, or an airbrush paint and clear. If you try it, let me know how it turns out and send me pictures, I would like to see your adorable kitty art.
