Q: Not using the litter box
May 31, 2008 | By Shelley85 | 1 answer | Expired: 2448 days ago
My mother cat of 5 litters keeps going #2 on the carpet. She has used the litter box before but rarely. She is very needy, wanting petted all the time. She behaves very well otherwise. She is 7+ years old. Any suggestions? We try to pay attention to her as much as we can, thinking maybe that is it.

When you say, she has used the litter box before but rarely, does that mean that she has always behavied this way or is this a new behavior? If the behavior is new you shoud firstly have her vet checked. Once you determine that it isn't a physical problem you should consider litter box cleanliness and the products you use. Some cats prefer to only go in a clean box. Perhaps getting an additional box might help. Try changing litter products and the type of box you use. Not every cat likes enclosed boxes. Some cats like privacy and don't want their bathroom in a high traffic or noisy area. The inappropriate area she is currently using should be treated with a pet safe cleaner specifically designed to keep her from wanting to use the spot again.
