Q: No Kill Shelter Or Good Home

December 30, 2009 | By DanieKayRob | 4 answers | Expired: 1556 days ago

Okay, so I have this puppy that we can not keep, living situation, & my husband is wanting to send him to a pound, but I can not send him there knowing they will kill him in 5-7 days!! I have called a few places & they are either full or a kill shelter...or send them to a kill shelter if they do not get adopted soon enough! We have advertised him on Craigslist & have had 4 takers, but no one seems to come & take him when they say they will be there!! Us keeping this dog will cause us to lose our home, as we already have 1 dog since he was a puppy & our landlord says "NO" to another :(! He is a good dog, he is bloodhound/malamute & needs a big yard to run &/or kids to play with, if any one is interested or knows of a no-kill shelter in springfield or the sounding areas please, please, PLEASE email me or contact me through here!! I am brand new to this site, this is the first thing I have done besides joining & I am not sure how this whole thing works just yet, but a response of any help would be greatly appreciated!! We have a 7 & 3 year old & he is wonderful with them, except he licks alot lol but that can be put to a stop with a little bit of work!! He is super super cute & playful! He is a solid golden color, born August 13th 2009 & a little over months old! If any knows of someone else you know that may be interested they are welcome to contact me as well!! As I am on my work computer & do not have a picture to upload, I will try & edit this later when I get home & post one!! If I can not edit this, I will post a new question & labe it with the same tags & everything as this so it can be easily found!!

OKAY SO SINCE I AM NEW & DO NOT KNOW HOW TO COMMENT BACK TO PEOPLE WHO ANSWER MY QUESTION, BUT WE FOUND HIM A GOOD HOME WITH ANOTHER PUPPY & 2 GIRLS TO PLAY WH & LOVE HIM!!!! THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HEP!!

i would shoot for finding him a good home. craigslist is a good way to place him, but normally you get one taker for every 5 or 6 calls/emails.
when placing him through craigslist, be sure to screen everyone and ALWAYS ASK FOR A REHOMING FEE. $50-$75 is good for a puppy. make sure they are right for him and he's right for them before giving him away and if you ever feel iffy about it, tell them no.
after speaking to the perspective adopter on the phone, have them come over to meet the puppy but don't let them take him home. deliver the pup to them in a day or two so you can actually see where he'll live. this is not invasive and i've never had someone refuse, but i have gone to homes that were hazardous to animals. you just never know until you see it for yourself.

why don't you edit this entry and attach a photo so people can see what he looks like. You might get someone on the site that's interested.

You can also try to find breed specific rescues, like a bloodhound or malamute rescue. Look some up on the internet and email them. Some rescues, in special cases, will agree to transport the dog or come pick it up if you're not in their area. Don't be afraid to ask the rescues, they just might be willing to help you. A friend of mine had this same situation and by simply asking they were able to find an absolutely perfect home for the dog. Good luck!

I'd suggest you find an "open door" shelter that accepts all animals. Even IF it is a "kill" shelter, the puppy is not as likely as an older dog to be euthanized, especially if it is healthy and sociable (which it sounds like it is). Likewise, puppies (and young dogs) typically have a greater chance of being adopted rather quickly. GOOD LUCK.
