Q: new pet health and psych

August 25, 2011 | By Kalilove | 2 answers | Expired: 1142 days ago

I was given a 3 month old Chihuaha/terrier mixture yesterday. she has not had any immunizations yet, hides in small spaces like besides refrigerator, by couch and is very startled. She doesn't eat or drink much just sleeps alot and not very playful at all. Previous owner says her twin brother died at 2 weeks old. Could this be the problem? Or could she really be ill?
Suggestions anyone????

Please take her to the vet right away after making sure she is healthy I can tell you a chihauhua is a breed that is naturally nervous but not this nervous so I would say either it is health problems or the poor pup has been abused Terriers are really active and wild and usaully not scared of anything at all. Please take this pup to the vet right away!

Whenever you adopt a new pet, they should be taken to the vet within that first week in their new home. Her brother may have died from malnutrition {as most people don't realize the needs of a pregnant or nursing mother} or it may have been due to illness - which could be anywhere from worms to an upper respiratory infection to something highly critical like parvo.

Your puppy could have the same illness, a different one, or may have spent her first few months so under nourished that she must be rehabilitated. It could also be new home jitters. Either way, she does need to see a vet immediately and you should also do an online search for "small dog syndrome" so when she's feeling better, you can socialize her properly and avoid any future behavioral issues.
