Q: Need suggestions on adding a new puppy. I have a 13 year old female Jack Russell.

I adopted a 5 month old male terrier/chihuahua mix. The puppy is sweet and loves to play. The senior female Jack does not like to play and just wants to be left alone. She has never been animal friendly. Can this work? Things are not going well.

The older animal will learn to tolerate the puppy and will. She may not play with it, but she will tolerate it and mother it. They will be companions and get along. They will get used to each other and it will work. I have 4 dogs and introduced all of them to each other as pups. It works.

It may take a while to work. The senior dog needs to be respected and the puppy not allowed
to jump on or make him play.
I brought in a puppy foster and all 4 of my older (but little) dogs were just not happy!
They were used to laying on floor or getting water and no one messed with them.
Then here comes this pup that wanted to bite at them with their every move.
She went to a loving home - and mine are at peace again.

I agree with bkind2animals. I have four small dogs and brought in a stray Cocker Spaniel puppy. The other dogs were not happy. A friend of ours who lost their cocker a month or so before gave the puppy a new home. And my dogs mellowed out again. They seem to be okay if the puppy is a couple months old and still really little. But if you bring in a larger dog they rebel. Good Luck! Hope everything works out for you.
