We recently started a fundraiser to help our area shelter. It is a deck of cards... Pet owners bring their pets for a photo shoot. They pay a certain amount depending on what card they get. They alos get photos like 8x10s and wallets etc. Then their animal is featured in the deck of cards... very unique idea... check out newtscards.com
Also, the answer above has some great ideas. Something yearly is a great way to go. to keep funds coming in.
I use to be a band director - we fundraise a lot.... Check with local grocery stores. Some of them have on-going fundraisers that they donate a certain % of a reciept amount. All you have to do is have people give you their reciepts... send them in, and get a check in the mail.

There are lots of different ways and it depends on how large your groups is and how many people there willbe available to help. I think our shelter has found that the most important thing is to find several set fundraisers and stick with them so that you build a following.
As you know, there are all types of fundraisers from membership/annual campaigns, dinner/auctions, walks, etc. We have on-going fundraisers - can collections, paper recycling and they generate a surprising amount of income with little to no effort (see the reviews on paper retirever bins under services). We have a devoted group of bakers and a retired person who runs them at a bank about 4-6 times per year. You may alos consider a sonsor a cage or a pet as a way of raising funds
SO, look closely at your group, your rescue and the area you live in and then plan fundraising accordingly. It helps when you start out to choose 2-4 fundraisers for the year and develop a calendar so that everyone knows they are coming up.

Parties and Dinners are great ways to fundraise. To raise money for marching band we have people make food and bring it to the firehall. We then have people pay about $7 per person. We live in a very small town but we still raise a couple thousand dollars. As long as you advertize it and have a lot of food you should be able to make alot more. Do a good job the first time so you can do it annually. If people really like it you are bound to make twice as much the next year.
Good Luck fundraising. I hope I helped you out a bit!!
