my dog refuses to let me clip her nails she pulls away and starts to hide. What can I give her to calm her down? ie:benedryl or some other meds?

What we do with our one dog who doesnt like her nails cut is put some peanut butter on a plate and spread it out so it takes her longer to eat, and then we have another person hold the plate infront of her while you cut and she never cares about her nails she just wants the peanut butter.

Definitely talk to your vet...I'd never give Benedryl to a dog for anything besides allergies. How about having the vet clipped them?

My sister had this problem with her dog. She started clicker training him. Once he understood a click meant a treat, she started clicking for the nails. It worked in a very short time. He is fine, now.

I would talk to the vet about what to give your dog. I have been told to use Benedryl for different things, but again, I would not give anything without talking to your vet. I would also spend a lot of time handing your dog's feet when you are not clipping her nails so she is used to it. My vet (I should say the technicians) will clip my dogs nails - your vet's office may do it for you cannot do it after trying the other suggestions people have offered.

one of my dogs was the same way, so i tried a different approach. i waited until she was laying down, already calm, and i sat next to her and just pet her for a few minutes. i had my boyfriend sit by her face, pet her, and keep a hand gently at her jaw line. i covered her eyes w/a blanket and anytime she attempted to get up, my boyfriend would apply just a little pressure beneath her jaw under her ear. i'd stop clipping and continue petting her and talking softly to her, then carry on once she relaxed again. i only had to do this twice b/c now she lets me trim her nails whenever i want.

I would talk to your vet and see if you can get a calming pill or something for her. That's what I have to do for my dog. I'm not sure if any of the sprays, liquids, or pills at the pet store work but you could always talk to one of the store employees or ask your vet for advice. Just make sure you give the right dosage. Good luck!

Dont ever give your dog meds without talking to your vet first.
