Q: My dog's collar is scraping his neck - help please!

Jennifer S.

My dog has a cloth collar. I have never noticed a problem before, but lately he seems to have scabs on his neck. He has hardly any hair on his neck. Anyways, I don't know if it is the collar or not. The collar is loose, but he still has these scraps. I was wondering if anyone knew a good type of collar, so that he doesn't keep getting hurt by it. Thanks.

Hi, Jennifer. Coupling this neck irritation with Kotter's foot licking behavior that you describe in your journal, I strongly suspect food allergies and/or immune supression may be an underlying factor.

I would check and make sure there are not any pickers stuck in his collar. If that is not the case you might want to take him to the vet to make sure it isn't an allergic reaction to the collar.

Hello Tonya

Do you use front-line/ advan if so maybe the reaction is from those types of flea products because it's applied close to that area, it seems to me when i apply it to my terrier's above their eyelids get irritated i think I'm going to stopped using those products.Cathy,CA.

Poor baby.

I am sure that you checked for parasites. I think that it is an allergic reaction to the collar itself. When your dog is at home with you and at night I would let him go without a collar until the irritation goes away. I have seen natural hemp collars on the market, but maybe a soft leather one will help especially one without any coloring.

The only thing i can think of is that there is something in the collar/material that he is ahving a reaction to. Try getting a real leather collar. They are a bit pricey but they last forever and it may solve your problem. Good Luck.

I have run into some dogs who are allergic to certain dyes in the collars. I had one dog itch the hair away from her collar and have sores. The vet suggested changing her collar from one that is dyed to a leather one. He said that some dogs who have shorter hair can have a sensitivity to dyes in the collars. He said that the color Red is the most common to cause problems. In all the cases, switching to a leather collar worked. If your dogs neck is raw he may need to be on antibiotics to help with any infection he may have. He may need to go "naked" for a few days while his hair grows back. Best of luck!
