When dogs won't eat at the Humane Society, we usually give them some chicken nuggets in with their food. We usually mix wet food with dry food and water... they love the food and they eat it right up.

you'll want to avoid feeding people food unless you're willing to make him homemade meals that fit his nutritional needs. it doesn't take too much work, but finding the right combination can be pretty tough and time consuming.
the problem w/seeking a vets opinion on this is that they don't really know how to behavioral issues. they're trained in the medical field and excel in that, but this doesn't sound to be medical. your vet suggested something that they think will work, but w/o having the training on a dogs psyche and behaviors, they can't actually know what to advise.
the truth is, the more you cater to your dogs fickle appetite, the less likely he is to conform to a well-balanced meal. no more people food! instead, use wet dog food and wait it out. he's not going to starve or even make himself sick. what he will do is get hungry enough to eat and eventually develop a taste for it. heat up the wet dog food before feeding him and mix it half and half w/his dry food. do not reduce the amount of wet food until he is enjoying eating it every single day w/o a hassle. once he is happily eating it every meal, switch it to 1/3 wet and 2/3 dry. in 4-5 days, do 1/4 wet and 3/4 dry, and the following week, try having only a few tablespoons of the wet just to give the dry some extra taste. to get him completely on the dry, sometimes you have to hand feed them a few pieces of the kibble before they dive in.
while waiting for your dog to accept his new food, check daily to see if he is hydrated by pinching the skin on the back of his neck. it should go back immediately. if it sticks at all, it means he's dehydrated. the more it sticks, the more water he needs. put some ice cubes in his water dish to make it more appealing and take him to the vet if he's dehydrated beyond what his bowl will fix - but still do not give in. you will also want to keep an eye on his gums. they should be a healthy pink. if they get pale, this is a sign of dehydration, do the pinch test - if it's not this, then he is anemic and needs iron. purchase a high fat wet food {your vets office should have one available}. this will entice him to eat. let him eat some of that on it's own, then mix some w/the wet and dry mix you've been offering him.

There are two possibilities.
1) Your dog is ill.
2) Your dog is spoiled.

Answers:
1) Bring your dog to the vet and explain that he hasn't been eating. If he's truly ill, your vet can probably find the reason. If he's not ill, he's probably just spoiled.

2) A truly hungry dog will cave-in and eat. The more to try to pamper your dog with different human treats and food mixtures, the more spoiled he'll become. It will just get harder to get him to eat.

Here's a funny story about that:

My boyfriend's grandma has a lhasa apso that won't eat. She gave it only kibble when she first got it. She gave him more and more human treats. Finally, she started mixing burger in with his dinner. He liked it for a while then didn't want to eat the burger and kibble. So she added cheese. He liked that for a while too, but now he doesn't. He only eats a tablespoon here or there. When he's really hungry though, he eats as much as he needs - when you're not looking. Not only did she spoil him, she's feeding him obviously super duper unhealthy food.

The more you make special accomodations for your dog, the more he'll require. Put out plain, healthy kibble for him twice a day. Leave it out for 30 minutes or so. If he doesn't it, take it away. Put it out again for his next meal. When he's finally hungry and gives in he'll eat his food.

Either he is getting bossy ( and I mean that in a cute way! lol!) or he has something going on with him and may need to see vet again.
