Q: My dog refuses to eat or drink from her bowls after 2 years of normal behavior.
I have tried all kinds of new bowls with no luck. She will only eat from my hand, and she will only drink from a glass if I hold it. This has been going on for two weeks, and I am worried that she is getting dehydrated. My vet has not been able to help. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

i agree w/stephanie. if allowed, dogs will take advantage of our sensitivity to them. when my dogs aren't feeling well, i feed them out of my hand and offer them a glass of water b/c it is more appealing to them to be served. but that stops when they're in better spirits. your dog isn't going to starve or die of thirst, it's just too uncomfortable. the only thing you should monitor is her water intake. do this by gently pinching the skin together on the back of her neck and seeing how much it sticks. pinch and feel if her fur isn't short enough to plainly see. it should fall immediately back into place. if it glides down, she could use a little more water. put a couple of ice cubes in her water bowl and gradually decrease it to none. if it sticks and holds, take her to the vet for a saline drip. this is a very off chance for a healthy dog no matter how picky they are, but it usually encourages them to start drinking more on their own.

Stop spoiling her! She is doing this because it works. You're a softy - lol. Put out her food and water and walk away. She will eat/drink when she gets hungry. One thing you could try is don't give her any food or water until she asks for it then put down the bowls and leave the house. When you get home, pick up the bowls. If there is food and wter in them, too bad. She doesn't get them again until she asks - then put them down and walk away. Dont let her control you, you are the human.
