Q: My cat will not cover poop in litter box!

August 4, 2008 | By Mysteri0us | 3 answers | Expired: 2163 days ago

Hi everyone,
I just adopted two cats from the local humane society and one is expressing dominant behavior by not covering her poop in the litter box. She also expresses dominant behavior over my other cat in other ways. How do I get her to start covering her poop up?

Some cats are just lazy and won't do it, as unfortunately and annoying as it is. It may or may not be a dominance thing; I've heard both ways. But I've also seen cats in a one-pet household do it too, so it may or may not be a dominance thing. Maybe she's just lazy. Is there enough litter in the box?

I don't have cats but I would bet there is no way to "make" them cover it, they have those litter boxes with a top, if you don't want to look at it, or if it smells more but they are expensive and I've heard if a cat doesn't like it's litter box or you change something they won't use it and that would be worse, and if its a dominance thing I don't know if you can change a cat I have 3 dogs one is an Alpha and it's fine the other 2 know and they all get along most of the time, I'm glad she's an Alpha, she keeps everyone in line, I'm not the leader of the pack and I'm fine with that, noting is ever damaged in the house the Alpha trained the 2nd grey in ONE day, and the Lab doesn't chew or get food out of the trash and I heard their famous for that, she's a rescue over 11 now got her at 8 + yrs., don't know if cats run things the same

Have you tried getting two litter boxes? It might help or a self cleaning litter box. At least the cat is useing the litter box. As for dominat behavior one of the cats is just going to have to back down. I have a new service dog and I am going through the same thing except my dogs are 100 and the other is 85 pounds. I know its not easy but hang in there it will get better!!
