So my 5 yr old cat has decided he does not need to use a litter box anymore. I have no idea what to do. I can't find where he is going, but it smells. What can I do to get him to start using it again and to get rid of the smell????

First and foremost, get to your vet to rule out any medical issues. That's the first and most likely cause for a cat who is using a litter box approrpiately for years to suddenly stop.

Then, barring any medical issue, here you will find MANY resources for dealing with litter box issues:

Cats prefer very clean litter boxes,so first, check that out.Sometimes cats don't appreciate any sort of change with the litter brand, new litter box, new placement of the box, sharing with another cat, etc,so have you recently bought something new? Is he neutered by the way,and just to be clear,is he doing #1 and # 2 outside the box somewhere?
Have you recently introduced any new pets to your home?
Any sort of sudden stress,UTIs,Illness, etc.,can also bring a change in the cats litterbox patterns.
Id start by crossing off this check list ,and finding out exactly where he's going, because that too could give you some answers. My sister had an unfixed male who started going near her kitchen back door because he knew she fed outside cats.
They sell a lot of products to help remove stains/odors.Off hand,Natures Miracle comes to mind, but if you go into pet products, they'll give you many more brands and reviews for them.
Good luck and I hope that you figure out what's up.
