Q: My boxer poops and pees a lot

July 25, 2009 | By Abate1965 | 4 answers | Expired: 1935 days ago

My 8 week old boxer poops about 6 times a day and pees about every 20 minutes. I dont let him drink a lot and I give him about 1 1/2 cups of Nutro puppy food a day. What gives?

I agree with everyone else but I would also have your vet rule out a urinary infection also or watch that you don't see dark or bloody urine with a strong smell. Sometimes puppies get kidney infections. If you think his urinating is more than usual it wouldn't hurt to rule it out.

I don't think this is abnormal for a puppy that is so young. They are going to pee and poop a lot. I would not cut down on his water. He should have access to fresh clean water at all times. If you limit his water he could become dehydrated. If you have not already had this done, he should be thoroughly examined by a veterinarian. I think you should discuss your concerns with the vet and he can tell you if you need to make any changes to your puppy's routine. Good luck and congratulations on your new puppy.

He's a baby, his food & water go right thru him & I wouldn't cut down on his water a puppy needs to be taken out allot & put on a schedule, I am going under the assumption that as soon as you got your pup you went to the Vet for a complete exam & whatever shots or med's that might be needed, also advise on what & how much to feed him.

First, you should probably have the vet rule out any parasite or parvo (which it probably isn't, since parvo has vomiting and dehydration, and not eating or drinking). But if all is ok, then maybe that's normal for him. I have a 5 1/2 month old boxer who at 6-8 weeks peed ALOT!! They pee about 5-10 minutes after they drink, they pee if they play alot and they pee after they wake up. The poop part I don't know about, mine pooped alot because of Parvo. Rule out parasites/probs first with the vet. Also, that might be alot of food for him, have you checked to see how much he should be getting? Or maybe the food doesn't agree with him. If he's healthy, it might be trial and error with food. Good luck on your new baby!
