Generally, a male and a female will bond better. A male-female bond will mimic the relationship of an alpha pair in a wild pack. Whether your new puppy is a boy or girl doesn't matter as much as the fact that it is a new puppy. Your older dog has to share with the puppy so he will resent him at first. The bonding may happen sooner if it were the opposite gender. They alwasy take a while to warm up to a new pup.

Good luck!
