M y cat pushes her food on the floor to eat it.

My cat Peanut Butter, puts a paw into her dry food dish, scoops out a few pieces and eats them from the floor. She has done this ever since I adopted her from Little Shelter in Huntington NY (2 years ago). How can I change her eating method (it's messy)?

One of my cats actually uses her mouth like a shovel to scoop food out of the bowl & then drops it beside the bowl to eat it. She's done it from the first day she was rescued off the street. No matter what kind of bowl I give her, she still does it. I just chalked it up to her individuality & cute quirkiness & bought a large placemat to put under her bowl. This way all the food is dropped on the mat & any pieces that she leaves can easily be dumped back into the bowl.

I just have to say that you could put her bowl in a box with low sides so that she can't scoop them off the edge of the bowl. You know what I mean?

A lower flatter bowl might help but it may just be one of those little habits that you can never change. I put one of the mats designed to control litter mess under the dishes that the foster kittens use. You can also use a metal cookie sheet under the dish you currently have

I can't say without speaking to the cat. LOL I got my cat from a woman who kept many other animals. When I first got him if he was begging for a piece of cheese or something I was cutting up in the kitchen, I would drop a piece to him and he would jump up and quickly bat it away across the floor to grab it. It took a long time for him to quit doing this. I think Debby is on the right track about it being because your cat was competing with other animals.

she might be doing that because that was the only way she could eat if she was housed and fed with other cats. my Chyna does that with water.. she will put her paw in the water bowl and drink it from her paws.. I don't know how to break the habit but you might want to put down a tray so that it is going on a tray rather than the floor. I have a tray under the water bowl and it helps to keep it contained.
