Q: Looking for a better dog food... but a relatively low price

Jennifer K.

hello everyone...

my 15 month old shepherd mix recently developed some itching and allergies. My vet recommended changing pet foods... but he wanted to sell me the pricey stuff he sells there, which although I would do anything for my dog, I simply cannot afford. So then he recommended Nutro Max since it is a better food but still close to the what I call "walmart foods" price.

It just does not seem to agree with my dog. He sometimes is not interested in eating (I am not completely sure this is related to the food though, it seems the days he is less interested in eating are the days that are 100 degrees outside.) The biggest problem I have is that this food causes his stools to be extremely soft. This is a problem for me because I live in an apartment and have to pick up the waste immediately. My dog also seems to have a sensitive stomach... he throws up easily if I am not careful about what kind of bones he is eating, etc.

So what I am asking is for a suggestion of a better quality food that is still reasonably priced.

Wellness is expensive but has awesome ingredients.
I have fed Taste of the wild, Natural Balance, Farmstand selects, Natures Recipie, Merrick, Canidae, and For the dog lovers soul. All of which are great foods. Alot depends on where you shop, the cheapest is probably going to be Natures recipie/Farmstand selects and Natural balance notmaly all under 27$ depending on the formula of course.
Hope this helps!

I use Nutro Max and it's well worth it. Cheap dog food can be iffy in the health department so you'll want something that is certified healthy but reasonably priced. Nutro Max is great for that and has a little less filler than some of the top brands out there.

If your dog has a weak stomach, throws up easily or has diarrhea like you're describing put them on a bland diet. Make sure your dog is well hydrated. If my dog won't drink from his bowl, I will usually bottle feed him water if he is dehydrated. I think heat can make your dog lethargic or depressed which can decrease their interest in their water bowl..

A bland diet consist of plain cooked rice and a boiled protein such as chicken or turkey. I also put organic apple cider vinegar in my dogs food to help his immune system. It can be used as a preventative measure against allergies and infections.

There are inexpensive recipes you can make yourself that are safe for you dog too.

I'm not a fan of Nutro (they have constant recalls)and I think its overpriced for what it contains.

I checked the price and on petsmart site its $35 for 35 lbs.

If you have costco membership, you can get Kirkland signature, which is around $22 for 40 lbs and has much better ingridients.

I personally like Taste of the Wild, its around $40 for 30 lbs, but since its grain free and more nutrient dense, your dog will eat less of it which evens out the cost. I prefer grain free foods because grains are not a natural part of dogs diet and are difficult to digest, its basically used to bulk up the food in order to cut costs for the manufacturer at the expense of dogs health.

Other affordable brands are:

1) Diamond Naturals
2)Premium Edge
3)Chicken Soup for dog lovers soul
4)Whole Earth Farms
5)4Health (only at tractor supply)

You wont find these at chain pet stores, so you'll have to go on manufacturers site to find a store near you, they are generally sold through feed stores.

I'm a big fan of California Natural. We were recommended the herring and sweet potato formula for our dog and it has worked very well. Don't forget to use half of her old food with half portion of her new until she gets used to it. If you make a sudden change in your dogs diet that could cause upset stomach and diarrhea. Good luck. I know what you are going through.
