Q: Jumping Dog

Jumping Dog

My dog Louie is almost 8 months old and he is a pretty big dog. When he greets people he likes to jump on them to say hi. I have tried turing my back on him, saying no jump and pushing him off of me and those haven't seem to work. Any suggestions on how to get my dog to stop jumping on people?

Pushing him down is the best way to train him not to jump - I would also suggest giving him lots of love and petting once he is on the ground and tell him 'good dog, down' while your giving him that love.

My 3 month old Puppy has this problem. I push her off me, and say, No jump! My girlfriend was over the other day. I tested my no jump, and she didn't. I hope it has worked. try it.

If you push him down or give him any other attention when he jumps up then you rewarded the behavior. You need to train him so he knows what you want to do. Just because you push him down doesn't mean he understands not to jump. Put him on a leash and practice with someone coming in the door. You should have him sit and stay until the person comes in. When he's calm and just sits and stays give LOTS of praise. If he tries to get up, put him back in the sit and stay. It will take lots of work and repetition. Good luck!
