I'm horrified with the description of puppy mills. Why aren't they shut down? why do people allow this atrocity to continue?? It doesn't makes any sense to me...

I think we need to make some politicians aware of the problem and have them enact legislation. However, with all of the economic woes we currently have, I don;t know if it would be taken seriously at this time. PErhaps those of use who ar emost insensed by this could begin a grass roots movement to stop localpuppy mills. The trick is learning about them.

Gread, demand, and ease. There is lots of money in selling puppies. Puppy mills are either investment opportunities/corporations or the family business (Amish etc). Puppy buyers are very vonerable to impulse purchasing puppies - it is sooo cute, it is lonely, it is on sale, it is soo cute, I just saw Marley and Me, etc.... The pet stores are in malls and easy to find places. Getting a dog from a reputable breeder can take months or years and is often a lengthy interview process. Shelters also interview the people and in many parts of the country there are not many puppies to pick from. People are attracted to the small, fuzzy, adorable baby and often dont want adult dogs.

People allow this atrocity to continue for one reason only, MONEY!! There are quite a few laws and regulations pertaining to puppy mills, but they aren't enforced or inspected nearly enough, becasue that would cost money too!! It's a sad situation. I write my Congressmen, but thats about all you can do, I guess.
