Q: Is using dish soap to wash horses okay??
Jul 22, 2009
Please do not use dish soap to wash your horse. It will dry out their skin and coat. If used regularly could cause skin irritation. Then you end up with a horse with dry itchy skin which means they will start rubbing against anything and everything! Next step is rubbing off hair...ect, There are alot of shampoos formulated for horses. You can also use some human shampoos. Just make sure they are non-irritating to your horse and do not use any shampoo around eyes.

though i've never owned a horse and have certainly never washed one, i wouldn't imagine dish soap would be alright. animals have protective oils on their fur and skin that species specific shampoos are designed to protect. this is why we don't use people shampoo on animals. people need to wash their hair every one or two days. compared to other animals, we're quite oily so our shampoo is too harsh to use on animals. dish soap is some tough stuff. it doesn't just wash out oil, it breaks down grease. i would think using dish soap would be irritating to a horse.
