is there a way other than the tatoo to tell if a female cat has been spayed cause I run in to the problem of not knowing I know how to tell with the males now but not with the females I would like to know just in case I find a stray female cat ever that goes to rescued paws so that I can tell them and know for sure I also need reminding of how to tell if a male cat is neutered I did know but I forgot?

Not all areas tattoo cats when they're altered...they don't here. Lots of times with females it's difficult to tell if they've been spayed. You'll have to feel for a scar on their abdomen. Sometimes you can see the scar on a cat with short hair. Other times, especially if their spay surgery was when they were really young or if it has been a few years since they were spayed, you can't really tell. Vets have a better chance to tell if a cat is spayed or not, but even they sometimes can't tell. They use such fine instruments now to operate that they often don't leave a detectable scar. The only other thing you can do is keep them up for about a month and see if they exhibit any sexual behavior as if going into heat. It's a lot easier to tell if a male is neutered. Gently press on the testicles. If they are large and hard, he isn't neutered. If they are small, soft, and feel like empty sacks of fur, he's neutered. Again, if you can't tell for sure, your vet will be able to easily tell.

as usual kelly is right. i guess if you wanted to go to the expence with the females you could have an xray done. i have read about people who took their cats in to be spayed and after the vet opened them up they had already been done. shame

Not always. Some scars are so minute that they're almost not there. Basha's looked like a tiny subtle scratch when I took her in to be spayed. You have to just assume they're not fixed, and most of my rescued females have not been, and have their belly shaved. The good thing is that you know how to tell if they're pregnant, so you can weigh the emergency with that.
