Q: Is my cat unusual?

From answers I have received on here I am thinking my cat must be pretty unusual. He comes when called, responds promptly to "no." Will wait at the door until I give him permission to go out. He rarely hisses at another animal, and has never hissed at me. He would not run away. I don't let him outside except on the front steps with me and when I tell him it's time to go back in, he runs inside! He doesn't jump on the kitchen counter. He's very tolerant of my dog and very nurturing to kittens. He doesn't care what kind of litter I buy or what food I feed him, though he does have his food preferences. I just love my cat -- to me, he's purrfect!

You're cat doesn't sound unusual to me. My cats rarely hiss and they too come when they're called, stop when you say stop, and occasionally do things like play fetch.

He sounds like he would be a great friend for my Smudgie. He has very similar behaviors. Almost dog-like instead of cat-like behavior.

I think its more how you treat your cat. Cats are just as trainable as dogs. A lot of people don't seem to expect or ask as much of their cats. We try to train all of our cats & our rescues to have some manners. There will always be some who are more compliant than others but they all have the basics. They all know the word "no", they know their names & come when called, they know counters, tables & the like are off-limits. We have cats that play fetch & chase with my husband. We never adopted that theory that cats are aloof & don't pay attention. We've always just trained them because we didn't want our rescues to be returned because they hopped up on a counter or something.

You are one of the lucky ones! Most of the time training like this only works if started from a very young age. My cats basically do whatever they want an I believe they find it funny when I yell at them.

I don't think he is unusual. Having a cat that follows commands is something that I did not have, but I have heard of them. My cats were perfectly friendly to my dog and one was even pretty protective of our dog. The only time I recall one of my cats hissing is one time when he needed a bath. Another cat in the family hisses and growls and makes a big fuss every time our other cat comes near (just for show).

I think cats just differ a lot.

Your cats unusual behavior is a testiment to your knowledge of animals and to your ability to connect with their souls! you kitten and you are both very special!
