Q: Is it safe to give our Rottie Pup the cardboard empty toilet paper rolls to chew on?

She is teething & loves to chew on things. 1 day I threw an empty toilet paper roll on the floor for her. I have done this several times now as she bags for them. I pick up what's left of it after she's bored & it's in a small mush mess on the floor. I don't think she eats much of it. I just wonder maybe this is bad but I am not sure. Does anyone else do this? Is it Ok or safe for a Rottie pup to chew on & possibly eat up small mushy pieces of it as she chews it?

I am pretty sure it is safe for them since it dissolves into small pieces in their stomach. My dogs continually eats the toilet paper and anything they can find in the recycling bucket. As long as they don't get into the plastics you should be good, but try to break them of the habit if you can.

My Great Dane will chew the whole toilet paper and roll so you may end up with that as a problem. However cow toes are the very best for chewing and it is all calcium. The dogs really do love chewing these and they last forever.

Yeah its safe but you might be sending your dog the wrong idea. She might decide to start chewing on other items that are made of paper or cardboard, it could end up being something important like an electric bill or pictures. There are plenty of other alternatives for her to chew on. Just go to your pet store and buy any number of hard plastic chew toys, Kongs, puppy nyla-bones, rope toys.

Stop this habit now. I tell you that our dog Hrothgar who was a 4 year old stray always grabbed the toilet paper roll empties out of the trash. I am sure he was allowed these in his previous home. So I started putting them in the kitchen trash can which has a lid.

I can home from shopping and had 12 pack of toilet paper and my mom had called to come right over. I left without putting the TP away. Big mistake. I came home and Hrothgar had opened the TP pack, pulled out each roll and pulled on the Toilet paper until he could get to the roll inside. He did this with every single roll. He had also learned to hit the TP on the holder just hard enough to make it come off so he could get to the cord roll inside.

So with the price of TP and never wanting to run out, I had to break this habit and it took several months.

So don't start it is my opinion. Stop it now and redirect with dog toys.

I personally wouldn't let my dog chew on it. You never know what the dog is actually swallowing. If you love your dog, you would be sure to give him safe products to chew on.

There are plenty of safe chew toys for dogs though Greenies can cause problems in some dogs. Paper can get lodged in the intestine if enough is swallowed. It's best to find something that won't break up and can be swallowed in big piecies. Nylabones work for my dogs.

I think all dogs love to chew on paper tubes but you do not want them to swallow the paper, it can cause serious problems. Get a Kong, put some peanut butter in it and the puppy will love to chew on this. Kong is the best toy for all of my Rotts, it is the only thing they can't destroy.

My puppy LOVES paper tubes! If I blow a raspberry through one, he comes running and barks at me for it! - paper towel or toilet paper tubes. I always make sure he doesn't swallow it - monitor the shredding and correct them when they try to swallow - say 'no, just chew it'. He's learned this and never swallows it.
Also make sure they know that only that material is permissable, and not your favorite paperback!

Good luck!

On occasion I give our girls paper towel rolls to shred, but I agree with everyone else that you don't want to make a habit of this. Not only could it lead to shredding other paper you want, but if your puppy swallows too much of it this could cause a blockage that requires surgery. Kongs are great as are many other toys.
