I have heard that peroxide is okay if the wound is only superficial. You should then put the peroxide on a clean cloth and only wipe around the area. Neosporin is best afterward. However, I would contact your vet and ask their opinion. Good luck.

If it is a superficial wound peroxide can be okay, if it is a deep wound, large wound or a puncture wound I would avoid it. It can cause cell damage and bite wounds can have deep pockets and hold on to the peroxide which would be bad. A large wound might suffer large amounts of tissue death and cause a bigger problem! Good luck Nicole, CVT

Yes peroxide is fine as long as you apply it to a cloth and scrub the wound with it, do not pour directly on the cut. You will have to scrub fairly hard to get it clean( bleeding tissue is healthy tissue). Neosporin is a good treatment for AFTER you cleaned the wound, but does clean the cut. Your biggest problem is gonna be keeping dirt out of it!

I agree with Kris. Peroxide kills the skin cells, it just seem to harsh. And besides, did you ever put it on an open wound of yours?? It hurts and burns like crazy. Neosporin is better. It also has a formula that offers pain relief. I use it on my animals with no fuss from them.

One time my girl had bug bites on her belly that started to look infected!
I put some peroxide on cotton balls and applied them to the bites.
By the next day the bites were almost totally gone =)
worked well for me and my girl!

My first aid book states that you can put some on a cloth to wipe off the area around the wound, but not to poor it directly on the wound as it can damage skin cells. It recommends an antibiotic cream like Neosporin. That being said, I reccommend a call to your vet. If it is a small cut, they should tell you over the phone what the best thing to do is and they shouldn't charge you.
