Im driving a long distance and my cats hate car rides. They seem a little better when let out of the carrier. But it seems a little dangerous to have them wandering around while Im driving

No, it isn't okay to let cats loose in a vehicle! Too many things could go wrong, and most of them would have been preventable--if the cats had been properly restrained in a carrier.
If there were an accident or some type of situation (e.g., window got smashed or cat bumped an electronic window open), your cats would also be free to "flee"--and they would because they'd be scared. It isn't worth the risk of injuring or losing your cats. Please properly restrain them!

YES!
If you make a sudden stop, the impact of flying around then hitting could kill them or you. Also if a cat decides to investigate down by your feet w/ the gas & brake pedal, it could be quite dangerous. Maybe you could invest in a slightly larger carrier w/ lots of vents then place a fluffy throw in it.
