Q: Is Cottage Cheese and plain yogurt good for dogs?

I have heard from 2 different vets, one said to give it to my dog, the other said not to. I am also finding mixed answers online. I have tried it with my dog, and he likes both of them. I just wanted to hear what other dog owners thought of the matter.

My dog was put on cottage cheese from the Veterinarian. He really enjoys it. I read where the lactose in cottage cheese is broken down during the process and there is no lactose in it since they say dogs are lactose intolerant. The one thing that your dog may become allergic to is the SALT in the cottage cheese. Some dogs are allergic to salt then try the no salt. Otherwise I think it is fine. LOWFAT also.

Just this week I was at the vets office and I asked him what I could use to get Dakota to gain a few pounds because he's so active and loses weight . He said cottage cheeese should work perfectrly a table spoon with his food everyday. So there you have it cottage cheese is perfectly fine to give your dog.

Yogurt of course is always beneficial, I have also used cottage cheese if my dogs get a stomach upset with loose stools, just about a teaspoon a day mixed with their food or with a bland diet to firm up the stool.

They are both good, but plain lowfat (not no-fat) is excellent for dogs it does the same for them that it does for humans, my dogs get a couple of heaping tablespoons as a good night treat, it started with my oldest greyhound who really had a touchy stomach when I got her se is now 17.

I give my puppies plain yogurt or plain cottage cheese with their food for calcium....it helps make their bones stronger. My boy Iggy Pop had such weak pasterns when I got him bumping up the calcium in his food with yogurt did the trick.

When Priscilla was nursing I would go through cartons of cottage cheese...the protein/calcium ratio is better than yogurt. And it upped her milk production too.

I know people who mix plain yogurt in with their dogs' food. My vet recommended it for my dog when he was underweight, but I wasn' t a big fan of yogurt. Just felt it was too expensive. He then recommended a hard boiled egg mixed with his dry food everyday. That works wonderfully. My dog's coat is so soft and shiny, and he was able to pack on a few more healthy pounds.

I've read online somewhere, that it's not good for dogs, .... for some reason they don't digest it good, it may sit in there "insides" and this can cause worms. Not sure how true it it, but I don't feed my dogs anything like that any longer.
