I have heard corn in some foods and/or treats can be harmfull to dogs. On the other hand I have heard corn can be beneficial toskin and coat. Which is it? What things should you be looking for in food that is harmfull? Right now I feed IAMS Proactive Health, I prefer Lamb and Rice but unfortunately they were out. What do you feed your dogs?

Let me answer a question with a question:

Have you ever looked at your feces after eating corn?

Corn is undigestible, at best. It goes in one door and out the other unchanged. Worst case scenario, it is a primary allergen, causing dry, flaky, itchy skin and coat, excessive shedding, and hot spots. There is no good reason for a dog or cat to eat corn. Corn, wheat, soy, glutens... all are bad grain/vegetable products that our pet carnivores don't need.

It is not really good or bad, but it isn't something that dogs need. Corn is a very common allergy for dogs so a lot of people don't like it because of that. Pet food companies list benefits in their commercials to validate it being their but for the most part corn is used because it is a cheap filler. I prefer and recommend grain free foods like Innova Evo because they are more natural. Corn is not very digestable. Not to be gross but think about it, when you eat corn it largely comes out looking similar to the way it did when it went in. If you do feed a dog food with grain, rice is the way to go because it is more easily digestible. Grains are not "good" for the dogs... my dogs are sensative and I put them on a grain free food and they are in such good health with no problems! Be careful on the treats you feed... they are the worst! Worth the extra bucks to use good food and good treats! Good Luck.... Orijen is the top of the line food.... although of course there are other good ones.
