Q: Is catnip safe for cats, and at what age is it safe for them?

I have given my adult cat catnip for years. I've never heard it is harmful, but since it has a drug-like effect on cats, from what I understand, I'm wondering if there are any known harmful effects.
I'm also wondering at what age it is safe to give kittens catnip toys.

Catnip induces a harmless physiological reaction in some cats that lasts for about 10-15 minutes. The response is genetic & about 15% of the cat population doesn't respond to catnip at all. Also, cats less than 6 months old almost never respond to catnip regardless if they carry the genes for it.
It is not dangerous for the cat to eat catnip, although you should never put it in their food because it may disrupt their diet & eating habits. Also, if you are growing catnip, make sure your cat doesn't ingest the stems. Catnip can be used as a treat or to get you otherwise docile cat to get active & silly & get some exercise. You can use it for training your cat to use the appropriate scratching locations & it also helps them relax.
I grow pots of catnip & let the kitties nibble on it, plus I keep jars of dried catnip to sprinkle around as little surprises. I also store their spare toys in catnip-filled containers. Most of the kitties get a kick out of it.

I've never seen anything saying that its harmful - makes my dads cat a little paranoid, but no long-term issues.

I grow catnip and give it to my cats fresh and dried. It can be dried and used as a tea to drink yourself. It is supposed to have a calming effect and won't make you "high" like it does cats. The effects of it on cats are temporary and not harmful at all. They can even eat it with no harmful effects. It does make some cats temporarily aggressive toward you or other animals though.
It doesn't hurt to give it to kittens but they aren't usually effected by it. Some adult cats aren't either. I also grow cat Mint which is safe too. It isn't as potent as nip but the plants are more attractive than nip plants.
Hope that helps. _^..^_

I have read that catnip is not harmful. The high it gives cats lasts for 10-15 minutes, then goes away. It may not be good to let them eat the stuff, so make sure your toys don't leak out catip. Different cats react at different ages, or possibly never. I think I read that most cats won't react until they're 6 months or older, and some cats never develop a sniffer for catnip. But I don't think it's ever too early, they just might be too young to react to it.
