We call them Tomato bugs as well. The only place I've ever seen them was munching their hearts out on the leaves and stalks of our tomato plants. So as long as you don't have any tomato plants, I'm sure you'll have nothing to worry about.

Oh! That's George! You finally found him! I stopped at a restaurant and ordered a tomato salad and that was the last I saw of him until now. I guess it's O.K. for you to keep him. I already had a memorial I would hate to go through that again. Please take care of him. Sorry for the intrusion he's just so friendly. He just seems to move from plate to plate. It's easier just to keep my dog's in the yard! Farewell George enjoy your new home. May a head of lettuce be with you.

I am not sure what that is! But it frightens me slightly. Sorry, but insects gross me out a litle... I can't help it! It is quite interesting looking though. (As long as it's only on the screen. lol)

All I know for sure is that these caterpillars decimate tomato plants. They are NOT a welcome sight near or on tomato plants!

I think Helen may be right also. I had a couple hornworms in my garden this year - Google Tomato Hornworm to get some clear pictures and see if they match yours. The only thing I'm not sure of is the hornworms that I read about have a "claw" on one end (nasty looking, but harmless - they use it to try to threaten predators) - anyway, I don't really see one on your picture. I found two that were about 2" and one that was nearly 5" long!!!!
