Q: I'm having a problem with my guinea pig

October 16, 2008 | By Pattypetlover | 5 answers | Expired: 2094 days ago

Since she was a baby, she's always had this one particular water bottle, to drink from. The tube was glass as well as the part that held the water. It recently broke. We went to the pet store to get another, but all they had was the plastic bottles with the stainless steel tube. We've tried those, she will not drink from them. We've tried bowl of water, but we're not sure, she's drinking from them either. What should we do?

I have guinea pigs that are big drinkers and others that drink very little. If you're concerned about her not getting enough liquids, soak romaine lettuce in water and feed it to her. She will get a lot of liquids from it. Guinea pigs in the wild get most of their liquids from vegetation. Put her favorite treats near the water bottle so she will know exactly where it is. Push the metal ball in with your finger to drip water out of it so she can see and hear you doing it. If she's nearby, offer the water on your fingertip to her. She might lick it off. When she is really thirsty, she will drink from it. Guinea pigs tend to be creatures of habit, so it takes a bit of time to change their routine. My guess is, she probably is already drinking from it by now. If you ever need to hydrate a guinea pig in an emergency, you can use a syringe filled with water or diluted orange juice and place it in her mouth, between her cheek and teeth and give her small amounts at a time. Wait for her to swallow before giving her more. Let us know how she does.

If you have no luck finding the exact replacement, you can try to train your guinea pig to the knew bottle....fill it with diluted juice, and/or dip the tip into yogurt (or something else that your guinea pig) to help her learn that the metal is a good thing. you will have to do this several times a day,but eventually it will learn, no healthy animal will go starve or thirst it self.

I bought one a few months ago for my hamster. I got it at PetCo. I'm sure they still carry them. It's like a testtube with a rubber stopper and glass straw. It's kind of small for a guinea pig, though.

I think the Lixit company still makes an all glass water bottle with a no-leak rubber stopper and a glass straw/tube. Might be worth googling for Lixit products.

Do you still remember what company made the water bottle that broke maybe you could go online, or call them, and find out where you can get another one. Hey, it is worth a try!
