We have a koi in a 50 gallon aquarium w/ about 6 other goldfish- the koi is doing absolutely fine.

for Koi and other carp, I generally recommend at least five to ten gallons of water volume per inch of fish, bare minimum, and multi-stage external canister filters (such as those by Fluval) rated for more than the capacity of the aquarium.
