Q: I need a very durable chew toy for a chocolate lab

My Grandpa has a very active 4 year old lab who loves to play with plastic pop bottles but I'm looking for a safer toy for him to play with that he will not be able to chew up so quickly or choke on. We have tried the hard plastic kid balls but he breaks them open within a short period of time and the majority of dog toys that I see will not last even five minutes.

I think Kongs are the best toys. You can put treats inside which keeps them amused. They also make them for tough chewers also.

I give my dog empty Gatorade bottles to play with. The plastic is strong and doesn't shard that easily. He'll chew on it and crush it for about 2 hours. You have to watch though because the lip of the bottle (where the cap screws on) can crack and cut his mouth. When that happens, take it away. You can get a case of Gatorade at Walmart for about $5.

Our Black lab puppy used to love chewing on everything he could get to from toys and shoes to cellphones and eye-glasses. Normal rawhide bones did not last long at all before he started to look for the next 'toy'. The only things that have survived his teeth were the Kong and Nylabone we got him. These were the heavy duty versions. We fill the Kong with some sort of treat and let him go at it. These two toys have saved countless other objects from being devoured.

Haha I have the same problem with my cockapoo . . . he will eat ANYTHING and toys are destroyed in a matter of hours. The only toy we have in the house that hasn't been destroyed is a Cuz. They are round balls with feet and very durable. Cut or tear off the feet and you have an awesome toy for a dog who like to chew. They are great!!!

My Ripley loves Kongs, he loves nylabones too, but he destroys them very quickly, and so I've stopped buying them.

Petlane sells a toy that is similar to a plastic bottle, it is called a Tug-A-Jug. One end opens up and you can put treats into it. The other end has a knob and a long braided cord so the dog can play with it and occasionally get a treat. My dogs love this toy. You can find it at www.Petlane.com/homeboundpetsupplies

My Chesapeake Bay Retrievers loved the Kong toys. They last a long time. They are definitely worth buying!

Check out Planet Dog. www.planetdog.com/home/ They have great tough dog toys. They even have a "chompers" rating system. I have two of their Orbee balls for my dogs and they are the only ones that aren't damaged. This company also makes a lot of their products here in the USA and uses a lot of recycled materials!
