Q: I just got my dog spayed and she wont take it easy

April 4, 2008 | By Bonnie G. | 2 answers | Expired: 2192 days ago

My dog was spayed 2 days ago and no matter how hard I try she wrestles with my other dogs and tries to run & play. I'm afraid she's going to rip her stitches open. How can I get her to take it easy for a while until she heals???

Other than putting her in a kennel/crate, there really is nothing you can do. I have had most of my pets neutered/spayed, and they have acted the same way. Having six of them doesn't help the situation, but they each turned out ok when it came time to take the stitches out. Just keep a close eye on her.

I've had that problem with a couple times in my family and the vet always tells us to stop giving them the pain meds. It sounds cruel but if she hurts for a couple days, she'll take it easy, when you give her the meds she doesn't hurt and wants to play, she doesn't know she needs to relax. If you think she's really hurting, try cutting the pills in half.
