Q: I have never shown a dog before, and i have questions!
i recently adopted Daisy, a miniature poodle with great hope of becoming a showdog. I have never before shown a dog, and i am what you would call 'junior handler'. one of my first questions is can you show a fixed dog or will Daisy have to be able to have puppies. also, i dont want to breed her, just show, do i have to breed her so she can show? i also would like Any tips on how to train a dog for showing, what requirements she has to meet, and ANY titles of books or websites that could help me.

Have you tried checking out the American Kennel Club's website? akc.org The website has all the resources to help you answer your questions. I have never shown my own dogs but I have been to a few AKC dog shows. I do believe that the dogs in most classes are intact but it's not necessary to breed your dog to show her.Confer with your local kennel club, they may have classes available to help you train your dog for the show ring. Check out your local library to see if they have any books about dog shows and handling (can't think of any book in particular that will help you the most). I have heard that having a mentor that has experience can help you a great deal in starting your handling career. akc.org also has upcoming show listings and I highly recommend visiting several shows to get a feel for confirmation shows. Good luck, it can be much harder than it looks but with the right preparation you will have a lot of fun with Daisy!

you can't show neutered dogs in akc shows. but i am sure there are some local shows that would allow it. good luck ches. i would sugest taking a class at dog show in behavior. i love these classes and i am sure you would have some fun and a sense of akomlishment. i bet i spelled that wrong
