The very small amounts of garlic that are present in some commercial pet foods have not be shown to cause any problems but this doesn't mean you should give your pets garlic. In dogs and cats, garlic and onion can cause Heinz body anemia, resulting in a breakdown of the red blood cells and anemia. Also, some human baby foods contain onion so don't feed them baby food when they are sick unless you check the label carefully. Cats are more sensitive to the substances in onion & garlic than dogs. All parts of the onion & garlic are poisonous to them. Signs & symptoms of ingestion include: Vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, discolored urine, weakness, liver damage, allergic reactions, asthmatic attacks, and in case of skin exposure, contact dermatitis.

Hmmm.thats a toughie because I have heard it is good, that it keeps fleas away too. I know onions are bad but I think garlic is fine. When in doubt, ask your vet. They would know the true answer.

Garlic is usually tasty to dogs (and some cats as well) and can be helpful in keeping fleas away.

Garlic is closely related to onions, and onions are toxic to dogs and cats. They contain a substance called N-propyl disulphide, which can cause what is known as Heinz body anemia, which kills red blood cells. Onions are more potent than garlic, but too much of either is deadly.

Small amounts of garlic are beneficial for the reasons stated above, and the amounts you see in treats and food will not harm your pet.

Garlic is in the same family as the onion plant. Onions can kill a dog. I have been training dogs for over 15years and have had clients dogs die or get really sick after eating garlic. All the dogs have been small breeds. I would be careful if you decide to give garlic to your dog/cat.

Garlic is actually good for some purposes like keeping fleas away. It's not bad for them but a lot might give them an upset stomach.
