I have a 7lb Toy Poodle how much should I feed him.

Sebastian is 9months old.He is very active. I feed him 1/4 dry with 1tbl sp. wet twice a day. Is that enough for his size. Also I give him treats thru out the day, and there is always clean water available all the time.

If he's of good weight then the amount you are feeding is good.I like to break meals down into two feedings.AM and PM.Don't believe in free feeding because many dogs will eat out of boredom and get fat.You also can't monitor how much they are eating.Obesity can lead to a great many health problems.Diabetes being the worse in my mind.If he should lose his waist line then I would cut it back and if he seems a bit too thin then increase the amount.Sounds like you are feeding him an appropriate amount.

My Jack is a very small mini. He's full grown now and just tops the scales at 12 lbs. When he was a puppy and still growing, he ate about a cup of kibble a day. He didn't get fat. He was full of energy and burned it all off. The vet even said he was borderline thin! Now I'm lucky if he'll eat 1/4th a cup a day. How does your dog feel to you? If he feels thin or seems hungry all the time, give him more. Just remember to slow down when he hits around a year.

I have always read that you don't want to feed toy breeds any more than one cup of food a day. I don't feel that it is necessary to stick to an extremely ridged diet, ie only dry food ect. As long as you continue regular check ups at the vet and he/she gives a clear bill of health, your feeding ritual is working just fine. I get a little anxious when I see my IG's. The breed standard is to be lean, but to me I would like to see a little more meat. It is really up to how your pet is responding and more often than not they will let you know what just right.

I give my two poodles(5lbs and 7lbs)unlimited dry food but no wet food and no human food at all.I make sure they get exercise daily and give them one greenie a day. They maintain their weight and are really healthy. The 7 pounder is almost 10 and she still acts like a healthy puppy so I guess it's working OK.

Does he seem to thin to you? Or very hungry liking he is looking for something to eat? You vet is probably the best person for advice. I would have him weighed and see how he feels about his weight. If he seems to be eating the fuzz off of the rug, he way be hungry. Every dog is different, there are guidelines but not set amount is the same for all. Jenna will eat the carpet by 9 PM if she doesn't eat something before bed. She is two and still can't go without the second meal. Usually smaller dogs need to eat more often. Just check with your vet.
